In 1972 Swanson-Japan Ltd was chartered as a 100% wholly-owned subsidiary of Swanson Systems, Inc. As such, it was thought to be either the first or second U.S. manufacturing company to gain a full equity position in post-war Japan. Its formation was preceded by the sale and installation of multiple numbers of advanced production and assembly equipment to Japan beginning in 1966.

Swanson-Japan's broad charter permits it to design, build sell, and service the full range of Swanson products as well as represent the sale and service of other manufacturer's products. For example, the company has been the exclusive representative for American Gas Furnace (AGF) burners, regulators, mixers, valves, and other gas fire related products for many years.

The company is also able to license other Japanese manufacturers to build Swanson products; and, to engage in local sub contract procurement activities.

Beyond Japan, the company services other areas in the far pacific region including Taiwan, the Philippines, and Malaysia. It also assists current U.S. and Japanese customers in equipping their plants in Korea and China. It has been of considerable assistance in coordinating Japanese companies' transplant activities within the United States, most particularly those which have been traditional customers for whom many years of prior cooperation has been accumulated. Such assistance includes not only production and assembly machine responsibilities but also assistance in establishing a technical staff and a vendor network for services and support.
